Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Its basal part is in a conformable contact with the underlying Lishan Fm. In some regions, it overlies directly the old strata.

Upper contact

Regionally, the next younger unit is the Yuanpan Fm or the Changlin Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed essentially in the Shaowu, Jianning, Jiangle, Ninghua, Qingliu, Changding, Zhangping, Yongan, Mingxi, Longxi and Yongchun regions. In northern Fujian there are found only coarse clastic sediments of the formation. In the Ninghua area the lower part of the formation is intercalated with two layers of marls, with a thickness of about 288 m; it is of 1054 m in the Longdou area of Shaowu County; and being intercalated with coal seams in the Songxi area of Qingshui County, with a thickness of 1589 m. In central and southwestern Fujian, the formation represents a series of variegated sediments, thinning from south to north, being of 1043 m in the suburbs of the Zhangping County town, and decreasing to 665 m in thickness till the Yandou area of Longxi County, where the formation is found to be intercalated with three layers of tuffs. In the Changding region the formation is composed of fine-grained quartz-sandstones and quartz-arkosic sandstones, intercalated with violet mudstones, with a thickness of 1435 m.

Fossils

It yields bivalves as represented by either the Cuneopsis-Psilunio-Eolamprotula assemblage, or the Pseudocardinia-Tutuella assemblage; clam shrimps such as Euestheria yanjiawanensis and E. complanata; ostracods as represented by the Darwinula magna-D. sarytirmenensis assemblage; and plants such as Neocalamites sp., Coniopteris cf. ihymenophylloides, Clathropteris sp., Otozamites sp. and Prilophyllum pectin.
